What is Qi?
Qi, or life force energy flows throughout the body. It helps to animate the body and protect it from pain and disease. A person’s health is influenced by the quality and quantity and balance of Qi. Qi circulates through specific pathways we call meridians. There are 14 main meridians in the body; each is connected to specific organs and glands. There are many more pathways and energetic currents that we tap into as well. Meridians are like rivers. Where a river flows it transports life – giving water that nourishes the land, plants, and people. In a similar manner, meridian pathways transport life-giving Qi to nourish every cell, organ, glad, tissue and muscle. When Qi flows freely throughout the body, one enjoys good physical, mental and emotional well-being.
An obstruction of Qi anywhere in the body is like a dam, backing up the flow and restricting it in other places.
Chinese medicine respects the individuality and uniqueness of each patient: because no two people are exactly alike, no two treatments will be exactly alike. Together will determine which techniques are most appropriate for you based on your chief complaint, symptoms, medical history, diagnosis and personal journey. What effects Qi?
Many things influence the quality, quantity and balance of Qi, physical and emotional trauma, stress, lack of exercise, overexertion, seasonal changes, lifestyle choices and diet.
How should I prepare for my treatments?
Wear loose comfortable clothing. Don’t eat large meals right before or right after your session. Refrain from overexertion, alcohol or caffeine for 6 hours after your session. To the best of your ability, avoid stressful situations. Make the time to relax and get rest around your sessions.
Between visits become aware of any changes that may have occurred and report them in your following session. Each acupuncture treatment builds upon the next session.
Do the needles hurt?
The sensation is often felt to be a vague, heaviness, and tingling or dull ache. Sometimes people feel a little prick on insertion of the needle, but most feel no pain at all.
How safe is acupuncture?
It is extremely safe. It is an all-natural drug free therapy, yielding no side effects except feelings of relaxation and well-being.
